10 Embarrassingly Shoddy Doctor Who Monsters

8. The Daleks in 'Destiny of the Daleks'

The Daleks in Destiny of the Daleks are the most sorry looking Dalek props in history. Some of them have been patched up with odds and ends from the last two decades that don€™t particularly fit together, but nothing is done to hide that fact. For most of the story the main Dalek has a random strip of metal glued to its side. This was actually so that a bomb could be stuck on with magnets at the climax of the story. This glaringly obvious addition is visible on and off from the first episode of the story. The same Dalek also appears to readjust its top section midway through a scene. Another Dalek apparently was borrowed from an exhibition at Madame Tussauds, with a misshapen skirt making it look like it has a huge trailing back end, but what€™s more, the back end has had to be patched up with some vacuum formed replacement balls, eggs, hemispheres, whatever you want to call them. This is the one Dalek that the director should have avoided shooting from behind. What does he do? So explain to me why we have a low angle shot of this patchwork Dalek showing off it€™s less than perfect derriere. The bit that takes the biscuit though is a scene where masses of Daleks go on a suicide mission. Now because the props run on wheels, the solution was to cut up one surviving Dalek props and make vacuum form moulds for lightweight Daleks, that an operator could lift from the inside and walk along with. So we have the threatening sight of Daleks toddling threateningly over the horizon wearing very trendy sandals.
