6. Fonzie Jumps The Shark - Happy Days
The Fonz is an international symbol of cool, which is something even people who’ve never watched Happy Days will know. He was originally a supporting character on the show, but quickly became such a hit he was promoted to lead.
Yet no matter how cool The Fonz might be, not even he could make jumping over a frigging shark seem anything less than f***ing dumb. This episode came during Happy Days fifth season and was included solely because star Henry Winkler was a good water skier. The cast and crew remember discussing this scene before filming, pointing out how stupid it was but the producers thought it would be funny.
The moment has since gone on to infamy, with “Jumping the Shark” become the official term for a series that resorts to dumb gimmicks to keep viewers entertained. Needless to say, it lost the programme fans back in the day, but contrary to popular belief it stayed on air for years afterwards.
