10 Moments That Almost Saved True Detective Season 2

If only the series on the whole lived up to the same standards...

It would have been interesting to see how critics and audiences alike would have reacted to Season 2 of True Detective had it been broadcast first, unburdened with the gargantuan task of living up to the greatness that was Season 1. Inevitably suffering by comparison, Season 2 has had a rough ride from start to finish, to the point that many have been accused of "hate watching" the show (a strange concept) just so they have an excuse to lay into it from one week to the next. It's certainly far more flawed than what came before, but taken on its own merits this season is a solid detective thriller that utilises the many tropes of the noir genre, even if it often does so in a conventional manner. Still, leaving aside writer Nic Pizzolatto's tendency towards mumbled macho dialogue and overly complicated narrative - and convenient plot contrivances - True Detective Season 2 has certainly had its moments; it's just a shame there weren't a few more of them to elevate it towards greatness. Let's take a closer look at 10 moments from Season 2 of True Detective which managed to transcend its flaws and deliver the goods.
