It used to be that a TV show would creep up on you, with just a few adverts ahead of time and word of mouth really helping to spread the word of the next big thing.

That's still the case with some series, but a lot of shows now arrive with a lot of pre-release hype that's more in line with what we're used to from the movies. It's why fans spent 15 months excitedly waiting for the second season of Stranger Things and are having an even more agonising wait for Season 3, and why Game of Thrones viewers live in a permanent state of hype and desire to see the next season.

Sometimes shows can soar despite the weight placed on them, as happened with, say, Daredevil Season 3 this year. Other times, though, it can prove too much. Last year The Defenders failed to live up to the lofty expectations placed on it after two years and five seasons of build-up, but even something like Game of Thrones was a bit of a let-down in comparison to the high bar it's set for itself, and 2018 has been no exception with regards to shows not quite making the grade.

This doesn't mean the shows featured are worst of the year or even bad at all - at least one of them is pretty good - but none capitalised on the promise, potential, or sheer hype they came with.
