4. The Doctor And Clara Part Ways (Doctor Who)

Doctor Who came roaring back this year, after a lacklustre Series 8. While that had the job of introducing Peter Capaldi as the Doctor, it was Series 9 where he really made the role his own; at various times funny, sad, angry, and weird alien, but always incredible to watch, this was his show. Well, not entirely his show. He still had to share it with his companion, but thankfully Jenna Coleman continued to expertly handle everything asked of her as Clara, and this time around she even had some consistent writing to go with it. It was already announced that Coleman would be leaving the show this year, although not revealed when, and her death in Face The Raven - a couple of episodes away from the finale - was a big surprise, and a difficult pill to swallow. However, the series didn't leave things there, as Clara was brought back in the finale, living between two heartbeats, and while people may not be happy at the seeming reversing of her death, it paid off in wonderful fashion. After the usual Doctor and Clara saving people business concludes, the Doctor wipes his own memory so he forgets she ever existed. The pair then talk in the diner, even if the Doctor doesn't know it (or does he), before finally parting ways for good. It was an ending that was both extremely happy and terribly sad, and absolutely perfect for both characters.
