10 Reasons You Absolutely Have To Watch Better Call Saul

9. You're Back In The Gilligan Universe

It would have been a false and unnecessary tactic to distinguish Better Call Saul from Breaking Bad by giving it a different look - it's the content that needs to be new, not the style. Stop thinking in terms of spin-offs, prequels or sequels and instead use the comparison of The Marvel Universe - the films are all interlinked and the crossovers are fan pleasers as well as narrative aids, but each one is capable of standing alone. Better Call Saul is not an expensive Breaking Bad Extra, or a way of appeasing Waltheads by padding out his story. For now this is Jimmy's story, then it will become Saul's. When the timeline reaches the point where Heisenberg comes in, think Tom Stoppard's twist on Hamlet, Rosencrantz And Guildenstern Are Dead. It's a jump back into the Breaking Bad World, but the focus will be flipped from one character to another. Walter White will no longer be the nucleus - he will become a means to Saul's ends, the supporting act. That's not to diminish Bryan Cranston's iconic performance in any way; it's just that he's taken his excellent turn, and there's nothing left for him to do except make viewers happy by dropping in every now and again.
