10 Things You Didnt Know About The Walking Dead Cast

6. Danai Gurira Was Born In Iowa, But Lived As A Child In Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe by way of Iowa, then back to America - that's quite the route to take as a young child growing up, but that's exactly where Danai Gurira, Michonne on The Walking Dead, found herself. Gurira is the daughter of African immigrants to the United States who made the move in the 1960s. She was born in Grinnel, Iowa and lived there until age five, when her parents - a university librarian (mother) and chemistry professor (father) at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville made the move back to Zimbabwe in 1983 following the country's independence. There she stayed until returning to the U.S. for college, studying at Macalester College - the same school former U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan attended. As a result of her rather unique upbringing, Gurira refers to herself as "Zimerican."
