Lately, it seems like everything coming out on television is a revival series of something that came before. There's been everything from a return of Roseanne and The Twilight Zone to a new season of Murphy Brown and Veronica Mars, and if you thought this trend was coming to an end, you couldn't be more wrong!
There are tons of revival television series coming out in the next few years, and a lot of them could surprise you—especially if you loved watching television in the 1980s, '90s, and early 2000s. Shows most fans probably considered long gone are coming back, and many of the people involved in the original series are returning to reprise the roles that made them famous.
Revivals have long been a part of movies, but it's only recently that they've managed to come back in a big way on television. Most shows never got an encore, and they concluded without any revisits, but that's how it used to be. These days, nostalgia in television series is all the rage.
There are tons of shows hitting the airwaves and streaming services you probably heard of already, but there's always a few that avoid most people's attention. These twelve revival series are expected to bring back familiar characters, situations, and places in the near future.
12. Jodie
Daria was one of MTV's most critically acclaimed animated series from 1997 until 2002. Since the show went off the air, the Daria universe has been quiet, but fans of the original series have something to look forward to, thanks to a spinoff series called Jodie (It was originally titled Daria & Jodie).
The original Daria series was itself a spinoff from Beavis and Butthead. The new show will feature Daria and her animated universe, but the focus will shift away from Ms. Morgendorffer to Jodie Landon, who was a big part of the original series.
Tracee Ellis Ross has joined the cast as the voice of the titular character—she was originally voiced by Jessica Cydnee Jackson. The premise will follow Jodie as she enters the workforce in her first job working in tech since she graduated from college.
The spinoff is the brainchild of Grace Nkenge Edwards, who will serve as the head writer.
"I am thrilled to bring this project to life with MTV, both as executive producer and by voicing Jodie’s character. Being able to give voice to fresh, feminist, and unexplored stories of young women excites me."
According to MTV, Jodie is only the first in many projects stemming from the Daria universe, so expect more to come in the near future. Jodie was still in development by late 2019, so there haven't been any updates as to when the show might air, but odds are, it will be in mid-late 2020 or beyond.
