20 Essential Doctor Who Stories For The "New to Who" - Part I: The Davies Era ('05 - '10)

1. Rose (Series 1, Episode 1 - 2005)

Sorry, but this clunker is still essential New Who 101. In it, you will be given the blueprints to The Doctor€™s life, his philosophy, and his TARDIS. But before any of that comes into play, we are introduced to Rose Tyler, the first of the New Who companions. Arguably the most important modern companion, she will help shepherd The Doctor€™s transformation from emotionally scarred Time War veteran (more on that later) into the man he€™ll turn out to be once David Tennant steps into the suit. As we€™re introduced to Rose€™s everyday life, we follow her on her quest for information pertaining to The Doctor. It€™s heavy on exposition, and the special effects are clunky as all get out (it€™s still painful to watch that €œPizza€ scene) but ultimately it€™s compelling enough to work past its faults and make you want to pursue further episodes.

Mike Reyes may or may not be a Time Lord, but he's definitely the Doctor Who editor here at What Culture. In addition to his work at What Culture, Mr. Reyes writes for Cocktails and Movies, as well as his own personal blogs Mr. Controversy and The Bookish Kind. On top of that, he's also got a couple Short Stories and Novels in various states of completion, like any good writer worth their salt. He resides in New Jersey, and compiles his work from all publications on his Facebook page.
