In a TV show full to bursting with stupid, horrible people doing stupid, horrible things in stupid, horrible ways - often hilariously, and while covered in blood - Tara Thornton was an anomaly.

You see, while her fabulously bitchy, witchy cousin Lafayette was the king of the withering putdown, Tara was just viciously, grumpily rude. While Sookie got herself into mess after mess after mess with (more or less) the best of intentions, Tara selfishly careened from pillar to post like the drunken, trash-talking douchecanoe that she was.

While Bill and Sam had tragic, screwed-up pasts that informed their every decision, right or wrong, good or bad, Tara just complained endlessly about her crappy life and her awful childhood, using it as an excuse to shove everyone away and drink herself into nonstop peril. She was a foul-mouthed, angry liability on two legs, and when she was shot in the head by accident at the end of season four it seemed like a kind of natural justice.

That is, until she was revived as a vampire at the beginning of season five, and continued to peddle her individual blend of infuriating, scowly self-centredness as a member of the undead. This, of course, gave her something brand new to complain about.

At the beginning of the final season of True Blood, Tara was killed off-camera by another vampire, achieving the True Death at last. Except she didn’t, because she continued to haunt the show as a ghost, appearing to her equally irritating mother to drag out the audience’s suffering still further.
