The story 'The Fall of Gondolin' is likely the first ever Middle-Earth story that Tolkien wrote - however it was never published on its own during his life, and was edited by his son Christopher Tolkien into a book which will be published in August 2018.

It tells the story of the rise and fall of the city of Gondolin - an elven city somewhere in Middle Earth. Since the book hasn't been released, the plot isn't very well known - but the title says a lot. Stories focused on a collection of people in a location usually make for good TV - just look at Lost or Orange is the New Black, in which the location is one of the main characters.

The show could introduce a host of characters pivotal to the city - a leader, a military figure, a farmer, a construction worker, amongst more, and each episode could show a new crisis to the city which affects all of them. They needn't even ever meet, but by showing a whole host of characters we get to learn more about the city. Since The Lord of the Rings films focused on the heroes, showing the normal people in the universe would be a great way to flesh out the towns, cities and history of the world.

In a running theme with these stories, The Fall of Gondolin is also a part of the Morgoth saga. In fact, most of Tolkien's stories are - The Lord of the Rings and other Sauron-related stories are just footnotes in his wider world.

I'm based in the UK, looking to make a career out of writing about entertainment and culture. The only thing I like as much as watching films, playing games or listening to music is enjoying as much hummus and crisps as I can while I do so. My favourite film is Eddie the Eagle and I like any game that lets me wander around beautiful worlds (or eat hummus and crisps).
