The second largest health insurer in the US, Anthem, has been on the receiving end of one of the most data sensitive cyber hacks this year. The attack exposed names, birthdays and social security numbers among other data, however doesn’t yet appeared to involve medical information or financial details such as credit-card or bank account numbers. The actual database affected by the attack included information on both current and former customers going back to 2004.

Although the initial hack was in 2015, the implications of something as large as this will certainly stay with the organisation for a considerable amount of time if not indefinitely. The insurer said that lawsuits related to the incursion have been ‘’filed in courts in many states’’ and there will be many others in the future seeking damages as a result of the attack.

Either through a lack of fortune or an inability to learn form past mistakes, Anthem has also flagged a breach in its annual report which was filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
