5 Reasons Why You Should Be Watching The Returned (Les Revenants)

3. The Characters Aren€™t Clichés

the returned tv show Camille€™s mother runs to hide all traces of the shrines left in her daughter€™s room when she finds her teenage daughter not a day older raiding her fridge. The star of this is Camille€™s twin sister Lena played by Jenna Thiam, who is sure to become a big star after this, who is less than happy with her sisters return. The fact they are twins is somewhat poignant after Lena has grown into a woman who regularly engages in adult activity while Camille is stuck in a body of a young teenager. Camille slowly tries to transform into her older sister. Camille also notices the regular appearances of Pierre and the lack of her dad who has divorced their mother in her absence, the first few episodes deal with the fact life has moved on while they have been dead. Pierre isn€™t the nice helping man he seems as he reveals more than he should know about the situations, he is someone who could either be evil under a surface of kindness or kind under the evil surface. His collection of returnees is somewhere between possessive and caring. Adele, the would be wife and mother of Simon€™s now nine year old daughter, is suitably confused by Simon€™s appearance and puts it down to seeing ghosts of past loves. Her current husband, police chief, Thomas who believes Simon to be a criminal is less than impressed as he witnesses their love through CCTV cameras that line the town. Simon starts of as a love lost boy but slowly becomes vindictive and not entirely pleasant but he is still a much more likeable character than the lying and voyeur Thomas. Adele is a surprisingly strong character who seems to have moved on in life despite her tragedy. Victor played by the wonderfully sinister Swann Nambotin, who people often run away from him in fear in the streets of Lyon where the young boy lives, is an actor who can one second look pure angelic and the next like The Omen is a mystery from the start. He follows nurse Julie home where the woman takes him in much to the dismay of the nosy neighbour, refusing to speak he hides out in her house as no one appears to be looking for him. Serge returns straight into his old way of cannibalism before Tony knocks him out once again before revealing their beloved mother is also departed. The brother mutual love and hatred is fascinating to watch as the shows progress. Mme Costa, the wife of a teacher who out lived her by a good thirty years, is somewhere between good and evil but is the light relief for a fairly morbid show. Her sharp tongue and witty responses to Camille€™s over eager questions is perfectly unhelpful but she seems to get some glee in it. No character here is obviously good nor obviously evil, leaving the audience to read between blurred lines.
