8 Things The Walking Dead Must Fix In Season 8 Part B

6. Eugene Porter's Story Arc

The Walking Dead Carl Grimes
Gene Page/AMC

Eugene Porter isn't a bad person, but he isn't a brave one either, and he'd be the first one to admit that. Josh McDermitt's mulleted coward has become a source of frustration for many fans as the subplot involving his fear-inspired alliance with Negan and the Saviors grows increasingly drawn out.

It's become painfully apparent that looking after number one is Eugene's priority, and siding with the bad guys and remaining loyal to them is his method of self-preservation. That said, he isn't completely incapable of doing the right thing: helping Sasha, and more recently Gabriel, hints at moral fibre beneath all of that cowardice.

Just when you start thinking there's redemption in Eugene's future and consider the possibility he's playing the long game on the double agent front, he goes and reaffirms his unwavering commitment to the Saviors. Season 8A left him firmly Team Negan, but racked with guilt over his allegiance to this monster.

Here's the problem with Eugene: the writers must decide whether he can be redeemed because the question marks surrounding his destiny have lingered for too long. A satisfactory conclusion to his arc will be tough since it's difficult to root for a character with little backbone, yet the fact he's conflicted about his choices suggests the fans shouldn't give up hope he will one day turn on his Lucille-wielding oppressor.

One thing's for sure, though, this story arc needs wrapping up in Season 8B.
