Don't all gasp at once, but it's possible that Aerys "The Mad King" Targaryen might've had a couple of mental issues.

King Aerys likely suffered from a kind of paranoid schizophrenia, characterized by persistent hallucinations and delusions that coerced him into pyromaniac behaviours, as well as feelings of persecution, disorganised thinking and constant paranoia.

Mental illness was such a problem in the Targaryen line, with the likes of Aerion Brightflame suffering delusions that drinking wildfire would turn him into a dragon and a family history of hallucinations, that there were protocols in place to prevent mentally unstable heir from inheriting the throne. However, as the numbers of unstable heirs began to vastly outweigh the number of stable ones, it became unavoidable.
