You don't have to be a big fan of Amy Farrah Fowler to realise that Sheldon has treated her horribly over the past few seasons, yet somehow he still came out looking like a victim of sorts.
He barely gave Amy any attention during their entire initial relationship. It stagnated for years without any real sign of feelings from his side, despite everything she did for him. Amy would do anything for Sheldon, but the favours were only ever returned in tiny doses, reluctantly, without any sincerity.
Then when Amy FINALLY accepts that Sheldon gives her zero attention, she breaks things off. Cue Sheldon producing an engagement ring when he's alone. Instantly the audience was back on his side, and he suddenly became the one to sympathise with, when in reality, Amy should have drawn a definitive line under the relationship.
