When you think about it, most critically acclaimed television series need time to achieve their greatness. The likes of Breaking Bad, The Sopranos and The Wire take five or more seasons to tell their story, and that's on the lower end of the spectrum.

How many shows out there seem to extend into perpetuity in the quest for a satisfying conclusion? After all, it's not uncommon to hear people talk about how €œthe first season is slow€ or €œit takes a couple seasons to really get going."

What's astonishing, then, is when a show manages to astound viewers with just a single season. Sometimes this is by choice €“ the creator has a clear and concise vision for the story which only spans a set number of episodes €“ and sometimes this is by necessity €“ a programme is cancelled due to low ratings or some other factor.

With so much choice these days, beginning a new series can be intimidating. But these are shows that don't ask for a significant time investment; they merely ask you to experience their utter brilliance.
