9 Ways The Simpsons Could End

7. A Clip Show

End Is Near The Simpsons

There was always a persistent reluctance to do Simpsons clip shows; they were only ever out of necessity to keep animation times down and meet the full twenty-two episode order (something that became less of an issue as things went on). And, fitting of The Simpsons' disregard for anything approaching establishment (yes, they worked in a nuclear power plant, but still), they made a massive point of it.

The original one was literally titled So It's Come To This, A Simpsons Clip Show; the second, Another Simpsons Clip Show, turned the concept into an interesting art project, using only pre-existing animation even in the framing device (and thus doesn't deserve all the hate); later ones tried to provide at least some level of cynical spin on the idea - Season 13's Gump Roast ends with a song whose final lyrics are "Sorry for the clip show. Have no fears, we've got stories for years." And then you have actually smart send-up of the ideas, like The 138th Episode Spectacular (which isn't really a clip show, but whatever).

As it's such a trope, what better way to end the show than with a good chunk of irreverence towards the concept? The set up can be simple, allowing for a nostalgic run of classic clips, because, after all, watching old Simpsons is always preferential to the new stuff anyway.
