A Series Of Unfortunate Events Season 2: 10 Miserable Fan Theories You Don't Want To See

10. The Time Period

A Series Of Unfortunate Events

The show takes place in a very undefined time period. Thanks to the writing of Lemony Snicket - and now the scripting of the show - there's a timeless quality to the series; it essentially feels like it exists in its own little world, with a mish-mash of costumes and sets that could all be from a variety of eras - outfits that could be taken from the 20s, sets from the 40s, technology from across the last two decades.

Mostly this is explained as being Snicket's world, left deliberately anachronistic so as to really create that timeless feel (which it does very well). Some go as far as to suggest it really is a parallel world, much like our own but with some key differences (the Edwardian period lasted a lot longer, WWI and II never happened). Another, even more far-out theory is that it could take place in the Fallout universe, given the mix of old and new. Other theories pertaining to Count Olaf's character suggest this is Barney Stinson post-How I Met Your Mother, or even a pre-Springfield Mr Burns...

Of course, it's better left unconfirmed, but then that's part of the fun in theorising.
