7. The Delectable Design

The show is quite unlike anything else on TV, and a big reason for that is in the lavish production and costume design, which blends gothic fantasy with magical realism and period pieces with modern trappings.

The sets are stunning, and the various fancy dress costumes equally so, whether it's one of Olaf's disguises, a rundown boarding school, or a swanky penthouse apartment. Everything we see on screen is as eye-catching as a man with hooks for hands or a person with two heads, and helps give the show an almost indefinable setting that simply adds to the weird, off-kilter nature of things.

NCTJ-qualified journalist. Most definitely not a racing driver. Drink too much tea; eat too much peanut butter; watch too much TV. Sadly only the latter paying off so far. A mix of wise-old man in a young man's body with a child-like wonder about him and a great otherworldly sensibility.
