A Series Of Unfortunate Events Season 3 Review: 6 Ups & 3 Downs

3. The Inconsistent Visual Effects

A Series Of Unfortunate Events Season 3
Netflix

This has always been a weakness of this show in fairness, but in this new season the wildly inconsistent quality of the CGI became more apparent than ever. Was the show rushing to meet its January 1 release date, or was there not enough money in the budget to get the visual effects looking good enough?

Either way, the fidelity of the CGI veers wildly between individual scenes, and though the underwater shenanigans of The Grim Grotto look surprisingly excellent, the green screen in The End is shockingly bad. The appearance of a digital snake late in the season, furthermore, is almost laughably low-res for a production this lavish.

Some might argue that the wonky effects add to the show's loony charm, but there are far too many moments this season which looked legitimately ugly. It's all the worse if you're watching the season in Netflix's 4K HDR presentation, where the poor effects stand out even more against the crisp live-action elements.
