Many animated shows tend to fall around the same premise. Often we see them being about a family living in the suburbs of the USA regularly getting into hilarious situations. These situations are mostly brought along by the usually idiotic and ignorant decisions made by the patriarch of the family. Family Guy, The Simpsons and American dad are popular examples.
American Dad, although set in modern day, has a 50's house life style inspiration where Stan is the man who goes out to work and his wife is the housewife. She doesn't have to work but he doesn't do any cooking and cleaning. It is quite a sexist outlook on gender roles but it is smoothed over by the show regularly giving examples of everything wrong with it in a consistently funny way.
