American Horror Story: Murder House - 12 Most Shocking Moments

Frankenstein babies, the anti-christ, and brains for dinner makes for one memorable season of AHS.

With American Horror Story: Hotel dominating a lot of people's nightmares, it's time to revisit some of the most shocking moments from season one. Murder House was simply genius with its intricate storylines, flashbacks and in-depth characters that have only continued to shock and surprise viewers throughout every season. Murder House explored a lot of taboo themes and, even though some of these are experienced on a daily basis, these events are probably what made the show so terrifying because it concentrated on real life horrors and experiences. The physical and emotional process of an abortion can be scarring, as can having someone invade your house and your body. Although there were strong elements of the supernatural which added to the shock factor that Ryan Murphy was going for, the scariest scenes of the first season were definitely those that focused on the inhuman thoughts and behaviours of the characters. Murder House focused on the true horrors of people and the atrocities that they commit. The show might have got weirder and scarier in the seasons since, but the original Horror Story can't be beaten for shock factor.

12. Vivien's 'Dinner'

Some mothers will go to extreme lengths to protect their children, but eating a bowl full of brains to ensure that they stay healthy inside the womb seems a tad drastic to say the least. Although Moira suggests that Vivien eats this 'meal' for the sake of the baby, she doesn't exactly give Vivien much of a choice in the matter. She practically dictates to her as to why she should eat it, obviously for the needs of the baby, but her concern for the unborn child is overshadowed with her sadism at this point. Yes, it's acceptable to give the mother something safe to eat, but brains? This isn't exactly a common meal choice for mothers who are expecting and it was difficult to watch Vivien try to eat it. At least she displayed her middle class manners by eating it with a knife and fork.
