The Crisis has been coming for a long time...

The CW's annual Arrowverse crossover has become a staple of the network's fall schedule. The major TV event usually brings the characters of Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, and DC's Legends of Tomorrow together to battle some unstoppable threat, and it continues to grow in size with each passing year.

This year's outing, Elseworlds, saw Oliver Queen swap places with Barry Allen as the two heroes (along with Supergirl) travelled to Gotham City and crossed paths with Batwoman in an attempt to stop the deranged Dr. Deegan from rewriting reality. They were ultimately successful in doing so, bringing an end to the crossover.

But Elseworlds didn't leave our screens without providing us with a tease us of next year's major event - an event that we now know is named "Crisis On Infinite Earths". Of course, this reveal sent comic book fans into meltdown, as it is a direct reference to the legendary 1985 storyline from the comics.

However, this upcoming adaptation isn't the first time that the Arrowverse has referenced this beloved comic. In fact, the writers have been dropping some major hints towards "Crisis On Infinite Earths" for quite some time now. So this crossover really was an inevitability.

It's safe to say that Crisis On Infinite Earths is one of the stories associated with Barry Allen the most, so it should come as no surprise to learn that it was referenced as early as The Flash's pilot episode.

Following Barry's first successful mission as the Scarlet Speedster, Harrison Wells (later revealed to be Eobard Thawne/Reverse-Flash) entered the Time Vault and accessed a future newspaper article. The article had an image of The Flash on it, and its headline read: "Flash Missing: Vanishes In Crisis".

Of course, the mere mention of the word "Crisis" in a DC property was enough to excite us comic book fans beyond words, but we weren't really aware of how significant this newspaper headline would become - as it would continue to pop up throughout the show's succeeding seasons, with minor details varying depending on how much the timeline was messed with.

However it unfolds in the future, there is no doubt about it, the Arrowverse's Crisis starts and ends with this newspaper headline.
