Strength, bravery, and loyalty: These are just some of the themes covered in this groundbreaking anime series. And that's before we get to the terrifying people-eating giants.

Attack On Titan is an eccentric mix of high-flying action and visceral horror, the kind to have been plucked directly from a nightmare. It was courteous, then, of those manga creators to share their horrendous visions with the rest of the world.

It's true that the Attack On Titan comic books laid the foundation, and there are also two live-action movies. But the long-running amine series is where the story really comes alive. Fans also had to endure a lengthy gap in between seasons. But since its return in 2017, the show has gone from strength to strength, and has unveiled a wealth of new twists and turns.

And with the next season supposedly set to return in April, now might be a good time to reflect some of Attack On Titan's darker moments. So here are some reasons why you should love and fear this anime in equal measure.

8. Titans Inside The Wall

Episode 25, The Wall - Raid on Stohees District, was a torturous affair for fans, as it marked a lengthy gap in the show's ongoing development. There was even a point when nobody was sure if it would return at all.

And on top of all that, the season finale episode closed with a micro-second, post-credits, bombshell: A Titan's face glaring vacantly inside one of humanity's protective walls. It's pretty amazing how one flash of animation can blow all perceptions and expectations out of the water.

The implications of this within the story were pretty disturbing too. Humanity had just successfully liberated a large district of their protective walls. To learn that at least one endlessly hungry Titan was also residing dormant inside these mighty structures evoked the feeling that our relentless heroes and their people would never be truly safe.

Audiences were forced to ponder on this twist for a long time, until the arrival of some new episodes. And the situation didn't grow any less bleak from there.
