Babylon 5: 5 Problems The New Movie Will Need to Overcome

3. Is The Story Too Big For The Movies?

The original series lasted for five years and several TV movies: the exact amount of time Straczynski needed to tell his tale. Five seasons of twenty-two forty-three minute episodes is a lot of story time, and so far Straczynski has intimated that he would have only one movie in which to reimagine his story. But even if he creates an multi-movie epic on the scale of The Hobbit and The Lord Of The Rings, that still only gives him somewhere around six to twelve hours to tell this epic, centuries-spanning story. A lot of detail would have to be shaved and doubtless a lot of fan-favourite arcs would have to be truncated or completely discarded. There is no doubt that there would be major changes to any re-imagining of Babylon 5, but given that serial TV is making a comeback, and that movies can only have so much time in which to tell their tale, is Babylon 5 actually too epic for the movies?
