The heavily anticipated Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover kicked off this past Sunday and at least for now, has lived up to the hype. Part 1 of the crossover came to us in the form of Supergirl season 5 episode 8. It was an episode with absolutely no shortage of talking points, including the involvement of various characters from other DC shows and movies, some of whom went back decades. However, it was the ending that dominated headlines and left fans utterly shocked.

For those who haven’t watched the episode, look away now, because there are MAJOR SPOILERS ahead.

The Crisis began with an initial narration from LaMonica Garrett’s Monitor, chronicling the beginning of the multiverse. This transitioned into a montage showing various universes being attacked, thus kicking off the Crisis.

With the call to arms officially sounded, Audrey Marie Anderson’s Harbinger can be seen hurriedly gathering all the heroes in order to make their stand. The first battle is fought on Earth-38, aka Supergirl’s home. And despite initial success in defending a quantum tower against the Anti-Monitor’s hordes of Shadow Demons, the heroes are eventually overwhelmed.

In the end, as time is running out, Oliver refuses to abandon the fight while the planet evacuation was not complete, mounting a one man defense. His heroics save a billion lives but they also cost the Arrowverse’s original hero his own. As Oliver says his final goodbyes to his daughter, all the heroes and indeed everyone watching all shed a tear, thanking the green hooded vigilante for his eight seasons of crimefighting service.
