DC's Titans: 9 Reasons It's Already A Dud

8. It's Trying Too Hard To Be "Mature"

Titans is a "mature" re-imagining of the Teen Titans replete with graphic violence and profanity, but there's a profound difference between a show that merely features adult content and a show that's actually for grown-ups.

Sadly the overwhelming vibe from the first episode is that it's trying way too hard to be edgy and not-for-kids, what with Robin's over-the-top murder of drug dealers in an opening fight scene, and his unintentionally comical utterance of "F*** Batman", which plays even sillier in context.

As a result it's tough to know who the show is really for: a lot of Teen Titans fans will be put off by the gnarly violence, yet those who enjoy R-rated thrills will probably find it too fundamentally silly to take seriously.

There was probably a firm middle-ground here somewhere, where Titans could serve as a gritty spin on the source material without seeming like such a try-hard attempt to be brooding and serious, but ultimately it ends up feeling rather desperate.
