DC's Titans Season 1 Premiere: 3 Ups & 2 Downs From Episode 1

Ups...

3. It Has (Kind Of) Figured Out What Type Of Show It Is

When the first trailer for Titans debuted, there were undoubtedly issues with it, but one of the biggest was easily the tone. Not only was the show portrayed as this ultra-grim series with darkness and despair, it also ended up coming off as one of those incredibly in-your-face shows full of teenage angst that was trying far too hard to be edgy. Quite simply, it was trying to be everything at once and ultimately failing in all aspects.

Thankfully, the season premiere did not fall into the same trap. Yes, the tone is still somewhat inconsistent, but one of the premiere's greatest strengths lies in the fact that it finally managed to figure it out by the middle of the episode. It's dark and mature, but it still has some heart and though it may not be crystal clear yet, there is an underlying sense of hope.

If we learned anything from the episode, it's that the show is nowhere near as angsty as the trailer portrayed it to be. The storylines are incredibly mature and it appears as though the show is targeting an adult audience, as opposed to teenagers. Think Arrowverse with the grittiness of Marvel's Netflix shows thrown in.

The trailer had left our expectations so low that Titans' somewhat coherent premiere proved to be a pleasant surprise. The only way from here is up, right?
