Doctor Who: 10 Under-Appreciated Companions

Delving into the Whovian archive and digging out those time-travellers who deserve more praise, damn it.

It's not going to come as a shock that in the circles of Doctor Who fandom certain companions tend to get discussed more than others. Sarah Jane Smith, for example, is pretty well universally loved and was still regularly discussed even before her return in the new series. Then there are the companions who get a lot of discussion specifically because there's a contentious lack of consensus about them and their role in the series. Anyone looking for an example of this phenomenon might just try posting, 'Rose Tyler was the best thing in Doctor Who ever!' in any handy forum and watch the response. Then there are the companions who are rarely discussed for good reason. Dodo, for example, rarely comes up in conversation and for good reason. There's simply not anything in particular to say about her. Outside of the much loved, much ignored, and much argued about, there are also the companions who don't come in for the amount of appreciation that they really deserve. Here then are the ten most Under-Appreciated of the companions, finally being given their moment in the sun. Feel free to disagree in the comments below, particularly the Dodo enthusiasts.

Mikey is, in no particular order, a freelance writer, improvisational comedian, volunteer firefighter, playwright, Bon Vivant, and Jane Espenson enthusiast. Born in the small mining town of Eden Prairie, MN, he has some 40 years later successfully moved about 20 miles north of there to the City of Brooklyn Center, MN where he lives with an unreasonable number of dogs.
