Doctor Who: 10 Great Writers For Future Series

10. Charlie Brooker

Charlie BrookerNotable Work: Dead Set, Black Mirror A self-professed fan of Doctor Who, Brooker is the lovechild of Chris Morris and Dennis Potter, and has previously said he'd be up for writing an episode of the show if approached. He is best known for his quick-witted, barbed-tongued criticisms of culture and current affairs on his variety of 'Wipe' programmes. However, the guy's matured leaps and bounds as both a writer and a showrunner in recent years- Black Mirror, and to an extent Dead Set, are two of the best dramas produced on British television for decades. They perfectly balance emotion, twisted humour and chillingly realistic social commentary. This is exactly the kind of thing that Doctor Who- a blockbuster family show all about big ideas- should be encouraging. Though Brooker's piercing scripts may need a little bit of censoring, but certainly not dumbing-down, there's no doubt that whatever he produces if hired for the show would be phenomenal. Even if it's flawed, it would be a damn sight more thought-provoking and exciting than what we've seen in the last couple of years of Doctor Who. It's hard to imagine what he'd come up with, but there's a good chance it'd be an emotional satire feeding on Capaldi's Malcolm Tucker persona without resorting to swearing. Getting Charlie Brooker to script even one episode of Doctor Who would be a massive coup and exactly the kind of refresher that Neil Gaiman provided with his first script, and Moffat provided when he was simply writing for the show and not running it.
