Doctor Who: 10 Props And Costumes That Miraculously Still Exist

9. Bessie

3rd Doctor Who Bessie Car Bessie, the Doctor's bright yellow, Edwardian Roadster was initially a thorn in the side of the production team that inherited it. Having been purchased at considerable expense by departing producer Shaun Sutton ahead of Pertwee's first season, incoming producer Barry Letts had to get some mileage out of it. After Pertwee's departure, the car made appearances in 'Robot', 'The Five Doctors' and 'Battlefield'. The latter appearance showcased some apparent cosmetic and mechanical restoration. With the axe falling on Doctor Who in 1989 Bessie would normally have been destined for the scrap heap. However, producer John Nathan-Turner had particular fondness of the car as he would wheel it out for publicity events and exhibitions. Since then, Bessie has formed part of various exhibitions around the UK, not least Llangollen, Blackpool, London and currently, Cardiff. In that time she had suffered a bit of wear and tear, having stood for another 20 years, needless to say Bessie doesn't run, but the outer shell is intact. Plans were made to fully restore her, however, these were cut short with the closure of the Blackpool exhibition. For a car that came into existence almost by accident, it is nothing short of a miracle that not only has she survived in one piece, but that she is on public display in her vibrant yellow glory for all to see. The same however cannot be said of the Whomobile, the Third Doctor's other car, commissioned and paid for by Jon Pertwee himself. It was sold at private auction misleadingly as a hovercraft and was accidentally driven into the sea.
