Doctor Who: 10 Most Traumatic Companion Departures

10. Kamelion (Planet Of Fire)

Doctor Who Kamelion Possibly the most unusual companion of the Doctor that has ever graced the television screen €“ only outdone by Frobisher the Penguin in the comics, books and audio plays €“ Kamelion was a shape-shifting android, originally under the control of the Master. The Doctor first met the robot when it was posing as King John in medieval England in The King's Demons. The wrested control of the android from the Master, and it joined him on board the TARDIS. From then on it only appeared in a cut scene of The Awakening, before appearing properly once again in the next serial to feature the Master €“ Planet of Fire. It was here that the Master attempted to reassert his control over the android, but Kamelion recognises this and begs for the Doctor to destroy him. This is the only case in the history of the series where the Doctor has killed one of his companions. He uses the tissue compression eliminator created by the Master to shrink and destroy him. So the last shot we get of Kamelion is a tiny robot doll with some wires dangling out of its arm. Not exactly a regal way to go, and made all the more shocking by the fact the Doctor did it. Perhaps the only thing that lessened the blow was that viewers hadn't really got used to the character €“ he did after all only appear properly in two adventures.

I'm a pop culture addict. Television, cinema, comics, games - you name it, and I've done it. Or at least read the plot synopsis on Wikipedia.
