Doctor Who: 5 Classic Companions Who Should Reappear

4. Steven Taylor

Doctor Who Steven Taylor I realize some of you may be scratching your heads and thinking, "Huh? Who's he?" Well, Steven Taylor was a space traveler who joined the Doctor after escaping from the Mechanoids, a robotic race that held him captive after his ship crashed on their planet. In fact, it was the Doctor's arrival that made it possible for Steven to escape (the Daleks had been chasing the TARDIS but got distracted by and decided to battle with the Mechanoids). In the ensuing chaos, Steven managed to escape his prison but was injured in the crossfire. He managed to get to the TARDIS, though, and the Doctor and Vicki quickly welcomed him aboard. Steven quickly showed himself to be a loyal and reliable ally, someone the Doctor was proud to call his friend (even if he never came out and admitted it). One sore point with them, however, was the strict non-interference in history; in fact, Steven almost left the TARDIS when the Doctor refused to save a girl whose death was recorded in history. Steven's strong sense of right and wrong eventually led him from the TARDIS and down a different path, but he and the Doctor did part on friendly terms. After landing on a planet that was recently recovering from debilitating war, Steven decided to stay behind and forge the two warring civilizations into one unified society. It was a tall order to be sure, but Steven had the belief and determination to see it through. We never learned how Steven's plan worked. Was he successful in finally bringing peace to a war-ravaged planet, or did his plan fail, dragging him down into ruin? It would certainly make for an interesting episode for the Doctor to return to the same society centuries later and find how Steven's influence guided the planet's development. Or maybe he could actually visit Steven again and congratulate his old friend on the progress he made.
