Doctor Who: 4 Great Second Doctor Stories

3. The Seeds of Death (Story 048, 1969)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Usn4c88TbEs I like modern Who, I really do. I think Steven Moffat has done much to make the show really accessible and excellent. But one problem that I have with him, is that he seems to think the show should be more €œdark fairy tale€ and not so much in the way of science fiction. Frequently that€™s been the case in Doctor Who, and while it sometimes works, I tend to think that the hard SF stories are more interesting. A case in point is this one. It€™s very much a hard science fiction story. It features a Lunar colony and transporters, ala Star Trek. It shows what happens when people become too dependent on those transporters. It also features the Ice Warriors, a once-great alien race from Mars who have a rather nasty plan in mind for Earth. It€™s all very hard SF, and that works well. That it€™s a really good story is also a nice bonus. Yes, the Ice Warriors look a bit silly and there€™s a bit too much technobabble at times, but it€™s still fantastically enjoyable.
