Doctor Who: 4 Terrible Things That Should Never Have Contained Daleks

2. Cigar Adverts

http://youtu.be/xWqoB6Ujj80 This one€™s very creepy when you start thinking about it which is probably why it was never broadcast. Prepare yourself for something you never thought you€™d see: a cigar advert starring a Dalek. Okay I know this was a different time but really? Daleks being used to advertise cigars? Leaving aside the fact that a Dalek would be physically unable to pick up a cigar let alone smoke it, you really have to question what was going through the heads of the marketing execs who dreamed this one up. Although Doctor Who is a family show, its primary audience is children. That has never been in dispute (apart from very angrily on the internet). So why in the name of Rassilon did Hamlet€™s advertising department think a Dalek was a good marketing tool? I have two theories: One is that they were trying to make people equate Daleks with cigars and net themselves future customers who were young Doctor Who fans (Blimey, that€™s starting to sound like a Doctor Who story itself) or that they€™d never seen Doctor Who but knew that Daleks were popular so they decided to borrow one and give it a cigar. Or maybe the Daleks€™ latest plan is to conquer the Earth by giving everyone lung cancer and a crippling nicotine dependency. It€™s much easier to invade a planet if the bloke who€™s supposed to fire nuclear missiles at you has nipped out for a quick smoke.
