Doctor Who: All The Masters Ranked Worst To Best

The many faces of the Doctor's nemesis.

At the end of 2014, Whatculture took on the grandiose task of ranking every Doctor from worst to best, from William Hartnell to Peter Capaldi and every incarnation in between. It was met with fierce debate from readers, a debate that is still going on today. So let's turn the tables and take a look at the Doctor's nemesis and fellow Time Lord, The Master. He hasn't gone through quite as many incarnations of the Doctor but he has been around since the days of Jon Pertwee's Third Doctor, proving a thorn in his side for years. In the villain stakes, the Master has been as much as a staple of Doctor Who as the Daleks and Cybermen. As a fellow Time Lord he is also one of the most interesting; what greater enemy then a mirror version of the hero? The Master's relationship with the Doctor has been a love / hate one; they fight and they scheme against one another but they need each other too, particularly in the years following the Time War. The Doctor will always stand in his way but he won't be see ready to destroy him as he would his other enemies. From one off appearances to multi-story feuds, the Master has had many guises. A writer for Whatculture since May 2013, I also write for TheRichest.com and am the TV editor and writer for Thedigitalfix.com . I wrote two plays for the Greater Manchester Horror Fringe in 2013, the first an adaption of Simon Clark's 'Swallowing A Dirty Seed' and my own original sci-fi horror play 'Centurion', which had an 8/10* review from Starburst magazine! (http://www.starburstmagazine.com/reviews/eventsupcoming-genre-events/6960-event-review-centurion) I also wrote an episode for online comedy series Supermarket Matters in 2012. I aim to achieve my goal for writing for television (and get my novels published) but in the meantime I'll continue to write about those TV shows I love!
