Doctor Who New Year's Day Special - 4 Ups & 1 Down From 'Resolution'

Our only Doctor Who outing in 2019 kicked off the year with a bang.

As confirmed last year, Doctor Who would not be getting a Christmas special at the end of 2018. Instead, Jodie Whittaker and co. would ring in the new year with Chris Chibnall's first festive spectacular.

Much like the previous trailers for Series 11 and Next Time stings at the end of episodes, we knew very little going into Resolution. All we knew is that we were up against the 'most dangerous creature in the Universe.' This couldn't have been anything other than a Dalek. In yet another ludicrously short trailer, the familiar 'EXTERMINATE' was heard, and the Daleks were confirmed.

Chibnall's track record when it comes to writing over Series 11 hasn't exactly been stellar, so since he was penning an episode featuring one of, if not the most iconic pop culture villains of all time, some were rightfully concerned. He had to both exceed the relatively tame bar he set for himself for his own writing, and then had to attempt to bring the Daleks back from a mediocre slump over the last few series.

Did he manage it? Did Resolution make up for a seemingly barren TV schedule on Christmas Day? Well, let's find out...

Also the go-to for Doctor Who, and could tell you why Sans Serif fonts are better than most. Still occasionally tap dances under the desk.
