Doctor Who Series 11: 10 Big Questions After Episode 5

9. What Else Was Happening In The 67th Century?

The Tsuranga Conundrum
BBC

When the Doctor learns they are in the 67th century, she remembers it as largely a good one, but with a tricky period in the middle. It’s an effective way of highlighting how well travelled she is, and the fact that she can think about a century in the same way we might reflect upon a year. But is this another aspect that is completely new to Doctor Who? Have we ever had a story set in that century?

The short answer is no, not on television at least, though there are of course plenty of stories of unknown dates. The century is, however, visited in the officially licenced Big Finish spin-off audio series Dalek Empire. In the third play the galaxy is preparing for another Dalek invasion. A short story by Justin Richards based on the Dalek Empire series is also set in the middle of the 67th century where there is a cold war scenario between the Galactic Union and the Dalek occupied Border Worlds (Mutually Assured Survival 2006).

There is no mention of either side of that conflict in The Tsuranga Conundrum, but fans are free to speculate that this may well be the tricky period the Doctor is referring to. It’s an argument from silence, but this might be the closest we get to the Daleks in series 11.
