Jodie Whittaker’s first season as the Doctor comes to a close this week with The Battle Of Ranskoor Av Kolos. While that is easily the worst name for a finale the show has ever had, there are plenty of reasons to think the episode itself will be fantastic.
Though Whittaker rightly got the headlines for sparkling as the first female Doctor, she’s not the only newcomer this season. There are all-new companions, for one, and each has been given time to shine and taken it well.
But perhaps most important is new showrunner Chris Chibnall. Best known for Broadchurch, Chibnall handpicked Whittaker for the role, and she’s not the only change he’s brought. Changes to tone, presentation and storylines have all been at the forefront of Chibnall’s debut, and there’s every reason to expect that will continue.
He’s so serious about the need for change that he’s even scrapped the usual Christmas special episode for a New Year's Day one instead. It’s been a season of reinvention all around. Will that lead to a unique approach to the finale, or will some classic Doctor Who tropes creep out of the woodwork?
