Doctor Who: TARDIS Landing in New Zealand?

Doctor Who New Zealand The Universe is a big place €“ what could possibly result in The Doctor careening his chaotic way through to €˜little ole€™ New Zealand? Or more correctly €“ why would the T.A.R.D.I.S. think he needed to be there? New Zealand has a long and loving relationship with the last Time Lord of Gallifrey. A part of the British Commonwealth, it was the first country outside of the UK to broadcast the BBC€™s premier Saturday night show, in September 1964. Continuous repeats - partnered with oft-delayed broadcasts of newer episodes throughout the decades - resulted in the The Timelords€™ 1988 single €˜Doctorin€™ The Tardis€™ reaching Number One in the New Zealand music charts. New Zealand is the only country outside of the UK able to boast this magnificent feat. Kiwi €˜Whovians€™ continue to form a devoted part of the Doctor Who fanbase to this day, with Facebook pages dedicated to bringing the cast and crew to the Southern Hemisphere. Despite the fact current NuWho writer Neil Cross (The Rings of Akhaten; Hide) resides in the capital city of Wellington, New Zealand fans have had to wait an agonizing two weeks post-UK transmission to see episodes of the latest series; there has also been no confirmation on whether or not New Zealand will be part of the reported simulcast of Doctor Who€™s 50th Anniversary in November. As far as long-suffering for long-time fans goes, Kiwis are doin€™ it hard. We then come to what could be called: €˜The Jackson Factor€™. Renowned Wellingtonian director Peter Jackson is a die-hard Who fan, with New Zealand papers reporting a year ago that both he and 11th Doctor Matt Smith were keen for the T.A.R.D.I.S. to land in the beautiful South Pacific country. Recently, showrunner Steven Moffat (writer of the Jackson-produced Tintin) weighed in on the subject, indicating that Jackson€™s request of a €œGold Dalek€ for payment could be entirely feasible. The only obstacle then, appears to be Jackson€™s commitment to completing a wee thing known as €˜The Hobbit€™ trilogy€€. In lieu of the T.A.R.D.I.S. and its enigmatic Time Lord-thief turning up anytime soon, New Zealand fans will wait with baited breath to see how many of the 50th Celebrations they€™ll be able to enjoy €“ and look forward to the magnificent Doctor Who Symphonic Spectacular due to take place in Wellington in February 2014.
