Doctor Who: The Doctor's 13 Darkest Moments

Episode: The Parting Of The Ways

Series 1 always featured the "darkest" Doctor yet up until the latest Doctor Who episode. Nine was the most recent incarnation to the Time War tragedy, and his attire showed a Doctor temporarily uninterested in his usual eclectic style. However, in regards to moments fans could pinpoint as dark, there weren't very many. Christopher Eccleston may have only stayed for one season, but he did a remarkable job displaying the hidden angst and nightmares the Doctor had without making it outwardly obvious.

However, in his curtain call episode, the Ninth Doctor was once again faced with an unenviable decision. Mirroring his choices in the Time War, the Doctor had to choose between killing millions of innocent humans, or letting the Daleks escape his gasp.

Still unable to deal with losing his own people, the Doctor turned to desperation so that the sacrifices he had already made wouldn't go to waste. Genocide has always touched a nerve with the Doctor, and he comes close to committing it again here.

In the end, Nine decides to change his mind, not wanting to become a murderer. But we know for a moment in time, he was committed to the idea, or else he wouldn't have sent Rose back to present day.
