The 71st Primetime Emmy Awards will go down in history as an event to remember. The ceremony was already set to be a historic night in TV, with one of the tightest set of nominated shows in years. Even more so than normal, there was pressure on a good chunk of these programmes to perform well; Game of Thrones' final season led the noms with 14, while other voter darlings like Veep and House of Cards were expected to enjoy a victory lap after dropping their final seasons.

However, there were plenty of underdogs in there to root for as well, which kept things interesting and audiences engaged to see whether they could topple the awards show darlings. Phoebe Waller-Bridge's Fleabag even getting nominated was seen as a major win, while surprise gems like Chernobyl stormed way more wins than expected.

There was a boiling pot of great talent in the running, and that meant a lot of the nailed-on winners ended up going home empty handed. From shock snubs to surprise wins, the 2019 Emmys will go down as one of the most stacked - and surprising - ceremonies in the show's history.
