Dark Crystal returns! Power ends! Orlando Bloom battles fairies?
2019 has seen plenty of ups and downs when it comes to fresh shows releasing, with some big expensive disappointments so far. The 'wow' factor has really gone instead to the sucker-punch surprises, as Russian Doll and Chernobyl came out of nowhere and are now being talked about as the year's best.
We've seen plenty of fan-favourite shows returning as well, but unfortunately with a decidedly mixed reception to most. Two stand-out shows from 2018, The Handmaiden's Tale and The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, both struck out with their sophomore efforts - and let's not forget the divisive reception of Game of Thrones final showing.
August brings with it some interesting trends, amongst the flood of new Reality TV shows and true-crime docu-series, we will also find enticing conclusions to consistent shows (The Affair, Power), rip-roaring returns of dormant titles (Mindhunter, Dark Crystal) and some big and expensive gambles (Carnival Row).
It's an eclectic mix for certain, with plenty of unimaginative product amongst some aggressively original shows. All of this is arriving just as summer closes, with the madness of Fall TV season about to begin next month...
