Everyone needs a best friend. There was even a song about it, that's how much it matters. And without someone you know you can 100% rely upon to be there, who will entertain and pick you up and always be there with a sarcastic remark or pithy put-down. You know, just what everyone needs in their times of need.
Luckily for Joey and Ross in Friends and Ted Mosby in How I Met Your Mother, there are two such men in the world of top level sitcoms who match all of those requirements. Chandler Bing is the archetypal dorky best friend, terrible with women (until he's not), but loving and funny and vulnerable at times.
Marshall Eriksen is much the same, though he landed on his feet early with Lily. He's everything else to Ted what Chandler is to Ross and Joey though, and both are the kinds of guys you know you'd want around you if things went wrong.
