Everyone in Friends has their role: Monica is the neurotic one, Rachel is the ditzy lead and Ross is the bumbling, slightly douchey leading man (at least that's how it all started). And then Joey, Chandler and Phoebe were more obviously comedy characters: Joey was a well-meaning but idiotic stud, Chandler a sarcastic loser and Phoebe a cookie weirdo with some dark secrets. They got most of the funny moments while Ross and Rachel got most of the romance and Monica was the butt of a lot of jokes.
It was a tried and tested formula that made Friends as successful as it was and it's no surprise that the three comic characters stuck to their roles even as their stories got more complicated. By then, of course, pretty much all of them were funny, but there was just something about the way Joey, Chandler and Phoebe were written that meant their jokes just landed better.
