They’re no longer on a break! Ever since Friends ended in 2004, a whopping 16 years ago, fans have been begging for and fuelling rumours of a reunion. That‘s not to say that the ending wasn’t satisfying; Ross and Rachel finally got back together after years of “will they/won’t they?”, Monica and Chandler became parents, Phoebe and Mike began their life together and Joey got a new chick and duck!

However, many of us were left wondering... Did the friends stay as close after Monica and Chandler moved to the suburbs? Did Phoebe and Mike become parents? Were Ross and Rachel really able to move past all of their issues? Are we all just going to pretend that the spin-off “Joey” never happened?

When the world finally received confirmation that a Friends reunion was indeed happening, we could not have BEEN more excited! Would all of our questions finally be answered? There are, of course, many rumours floating around the internet pertaining to this exciting moment in pop culture. We’re here to answer all the questions you may have and to separate the line between rumours and fact.

6. What Took So Long?

After waiting for so long, many of us had given up on the idea of a reunion ever happening. When fellow beloved NBC sitcom Will & Grace was granted a reboot in 2017 (after a pretty heartbreaking finale), many hoped the same could be possible for Friends. But it seemed our dreams just kept getting shattered!

David Schwimmer further drove the knife into our hearts as recently as January 2020 when he shut down the possibility of a reunion by telling The Guardian “I just don’t think it’s possible, given everyone’s different career trajectories”. He did, however, say that he thinks a remake with a more diverse cast (a nod to the show’s recent criticisms from younger, more woke viewers) could be a good idea.

During the time that Friends was filmed and even since, Matthew Perry struggled deeply with alcoholism and drug addiction. It’s understandable that Perry may have wanted to avoid bringing up these painful memories. He also told Variety “I have this nightmare that we do Friends again, and nobody cares”.

There have been rumours of something between Matt LeBlanc and Jennifer Aniston causing tension and suggestions that this could have prevented a reunion. However, these rumours appear completely unfounded given how much the crew still hangs out together. What Schwimmer said is probably the biggest reason it hasn’t happened yet.

The cast all went in different directions and were focused on their independent careers. What is now clear is that they all love and respect each other and still have an incredible fondness for the show and their characters.
