Game Of Thrones: 10 Greatest Deaths (So Far)

9. Lysa Arryn

Game of Thrones High Sparrow death wildfire
HBO

Episode - 4x07, Mockingbird

Lysa’s tumble through the Moon Door makes the cut both for the visual splendour of Lady Arryn falling through the clouds, and for the scene’s staggering upheaval of the balance of power in The Vale and beyond.

As Lysa casually revealing her teamwork with Littlefinger in the poisoning of Jon Arryn, Baelish's identity as the driving figure behind this entire grand tale is illuminated for all to see. In removing Lady Arryn from the game he’d started long ago, his role in the plot going forward changes drastically, with the puppeteer slowly becoming puppet master.

The changing of the guard is visualised beautifully in the episode’s final scene. Breaking up the ramblings of Lysa’s lunacy, a single push of his new wife cleanly hands Baelish the reigns of the Warden of the East. Much like the way Lysa comments on victims of the Moon Door being utterly destroyed upon hitting the rocks below, the earlier twist blew what we thought we knew about this story apart. Now Littlefinger’s in sole control of the armies of The Vale, a highly dangerous prospect given the knowledge we’d just been granted.

It’s a remarkably important death scene in its implications for the future of a story driving towards its endgame, and satisfyingly ironic to boot. So fond was she of indulging Lord Robin’s desires to put men through the Moon Door, it was finally Lysa Arryn’s time to fly.
