Game Of Thrones: 10 Most Hated Characters

Westeros had a fair few wrong 'uns, but which of them were the very worst?

Fans end up hating characters for all sorts of reasons. Their actions might be detestable, their writing diabolical or their acting simply dreadful. Thankfully, there wasn’t too much of the third one there in Game Of Thrones, but the first and second definitely made for huge factors.

This list deals with general unpopularity amongst fans, whether that be a villain we love to hate, or a character who became more irritating as the show went on.

There’s also the complication of characters like Tywin Lannister: clearly a villain of the show but so brilliantly played by Charles Dance he never really strayed into ‘hated’ territory.

This is a bit of a hodgepodge of unpopularity, with the reasons for each character making the cut explained within their own entry. One connection between all of them though is that the fans have a deep dislike for these characters, even if sometimes that resentment is what makes them so great in the first place.

Importantly, it’s only the significant characters getting a look in here, so Ed Sheeran’s singing soldier doesn’t get a mention, despite being hated by pretty much every fan.

10. Season Eight Daenerys

All of the other entries here will be about characters overall, but for Dany you really need to be specific. For the majority of her time, she was one of the most beloved characters in the show, with Emilia Clarke growing more confident with each season. The only real negative was that people couldn’t wait to see her finally land in Westeros.

Season Eight though is an entirely different matter. The Mad Queen arc probably would have been poorly received by the most dedicated Daenerys followers, but the general audience would have gone with it had it been given more time. Instead, the horribly rushed descent into villainy left fans confused and angry.

She’s not hated the way some villains higher up are, nor does it have anything to with Clarke herself. She remains arguably the most popular cast member, with Reddit community r/freefolk raising money for her brain charity in the aftermath of the show.

Blame is pointed squarely at showrunners David Benioff & DB Weiss, who have been accused of rushing the ending to move on to a juicy new Star Wars contract, which has since been revoked.
