The Long Night begins anew.

Though the main series only just ended at the end of May, HBO have today kicked off filming on the first spin-off, a prequel set in the early days of Westeros. Working under the title 'Bloodmoon' (A Song of Ice and Fire creator, and writer on the series, George R.R. Martin has said the show's official title could end up being 'The Long Night'), principal photography on the pilot has begun in Northern Island, a regular location used as the backdrop for the fantasy world of the main show.

A full synopsis hasn't been revealed, but Martin did promise that fans would see a very different Westeros than the one they're used to, explaining to EW:

“There’s no King’s Landing. There’s no Iron Throne. There are no Targaryens — Valyria has hardly begun to rise yet with its dragons and the great empire that it built. We’re dealing with a different and older world and hopefully that will be part of the fun of the series.”

Though viewers were divided on how the main series wrapped up, there's plenty of promise behind this sequel, with a great cast (comprised of the likes of Naomi Watts, Naomi Ackie, Jamie Campbell Bower, Josh Whitehouse and Miranda Richardson), and longtime Matthew Vaughn collaborator Jane Goldman as the lead writer and showrunner.

The air date is still probably a ways off yet - and this pilot could change dramatically once the first cut comes in - but the next chapter in Westeros history is officially underway.
